What's New in the News: African Edition - Niyonzima Urges Global Cooperation Against Gender-Based Violence

During a recent address at an international conference, prominent gender activist Niyonzima called for increased global cooperation to tackle the persistent issue of gender-based violence (GBV). Speaking to a diverse audience, she emphasized that no country is immune to the scourge of GBV, and it requires collective action on a global scale.

Niyonzima highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding gender-based violence, noting that one in three women globally experiences some form of violence in her lifetime. "These are not just numbers, but real lives impacted daily by violence that we, as a global community, must address with urgency," she said.

In her powerful speech, Niyonzima also urged international leaders to adopt stronger legal frameworks and enforce existing laws to protect women and girls. She pointed out that while progress has been made in certain areas, the fight against GBV is far from over. "We need to move beyond discussions and take concrete actions to prevent violence, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable," she added.

The activist further stressed the importance of community-based initiatives in driving change. She commended grassroots organizations that work tirelessly to support victims and raise awareness, calling for more resources to be allocated to these groups. "Community-driven efforts are vital in reaching those most affected by GBV, especially in rural areas where access to support services is limited," Niyonzima noted.

Niyonzima concluded her address by reminding the audience that gender-based violence is a violation of fundamental human rights. She called on everyone present to be champions of change in their respective countries, working together to create a safer world for all. "We cannot afford to stand by while millions suffer in silence. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every woman and girl can live free from fear of violence," she said.

As the conference came to a close, attendees echoed Niyonzima's call for unity and action, pledging to take the lessons learned back to their home countries and continue the fight against gender-based violence.
