Remembering a Young Woman and her Baby

On March 24, 2024, in the Argentina Sur neighborhood of Jobabo, Las Tunas Province, Cuba, we lost a young woman and her 5-month-old baby to the scourge of domestic violence. Their lives were tragically taken by her partner, leaving behind a community grieving their loss and demanding change.

The tragedy has shed light on the critical issue of femicides in Cuba, with advocacy groups calling for systemic changes and protective measures. Organizations like "YoSíTeCreo" and "Alas Tensas" have emphasized the urgency of establishing shelters and stronger government action to address gender-based violence.

“Their lives matter. Their voices must never be silenced.”

In 2023 alone, at least 36 femicides were reported in Cuba. This heartbreaking incident reminds us of the ongoing fight to protect vulnerable members of our communities and the importance of taking action to prevent future tragedies.

What We Can Do

  • Support local and international organizations working to combat gender-based violence.
  • Advocate for government policies that protect women and children from domestic violence.
  • Educate ourselves and others about the root causes of gender-based violence.
