Young Health Changemakers in Action

International Youth Day is marked every year on August 12 to raise the profile of youth issues and celebrate young people's contributions to society. This year, the WHO Regional Office for Europe is celebrating the young changemakers of its Youth4Health network who are reshaping public health for their generation.

From Portugal to Kyrgyzstan, these young leaders are speaking out on issues that matter most to them: mental health, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), the impact of climate change and its threat to human health, and many more.

Here are some of the outstanding young changemakers:

  • Inês Mália Sarmento from Portugal, a mental health and disability activist, champions improved mental health services and meaningful youth participation in decision-making.
  • Yevheniia Usychenko, a peer counselor from Ukraine, works across four countries to address crucial gaps in youth health education and support, particularly in SRHR.
  • Austėja Sakalauskaitė, a medical student from Lithuania, advocates for a more sustainable and healthy future, focusing on the urgent intersection of climate change and health.
  • Ulku Batyrgalieva from Kyrgyzstan, breaks cultural barriers to normalize conversations about sexuality and gender-based violence while nurturing a new generation of leaders in the region.

These young leaders, along with many others in the Youth4Health network, continue to contribute to a healthier and more equitable world. Their efforts show the power of youth in driving positive change and addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time.
